El fetichismo de la obra original

(The original work as fetish)
Sala Vinçon, Barcelona 1998

To coincide with the publication of the book Todo es comparable, for the first time OTB exhibited some of his pictures.
“I have tried to make people see how in the traditional fine arts—sculpture, painting and architecture—reproduction has its place, and how the prevailing fetishistic insistence on the original work seems disproportionate; however, if there are arts in which this attitude verges on caricature it is in what are sometimes known as the reproductive arts. Specifically, I am referring to photography and industrial design, disciplines that are paradigmatic of Modernity, of art in the era of mechanical reproduction, of the democratisation of Culture, of the suppression of the elitist barriers of bourgeois Art, the era of the Art for the People the Bauhaus dreamed of.”

Excerpt from the chapter “El fetichismo de la Obra Original” from the book Todo es comparable, used in the press release for the exhibition.

In consonance with this idea, the originals were not on sale, but visitors could buy photocopies, made in the gallery itself, of the works or details they chose.
