The aim was to achieve a truly stately table which could be easily extended. OTB resolved a number of problems that he had set himself: the table should be able to be extended from 1.50 to 2.80 metres, the extension panels should be stored as part of the table, the surface should always be absolutely level, the legs should not get in the way of the people sitting at the table, the curve of the table should facilitate communication, and the mechanisms used should be simple and silent.
