Jipi Lamp, 1968

This was an ironic comment on the hippy aesthetic, but with a Hispanic twist. If we cover the bedroom lamp with a silk square to create a more intimate atmosphere before making love, why not directly use this idea to design a lamp? It can be made by anybody with just a few basic elements; all you need is a wire frame: two interlocking arches joined at their intersection, supported on weights at their base, in the form of four small bags of sand. Over this wire we place two silk squares : first a white one, to reflect the light, and a second printed one to filter the light and make it more intimate. The squares were bought in second-hand markets to ensure variety in these unique pieces and to bring down the cost, since the silk squares always got scorched and had to be replaced often.

Obviously, this amusing idea never reached the serious, mass-production stage; only a few models were made for friends and family, although it did figure in the B.D catalogue. Years later, Ingo Maurer brought a similar idea onto the market, a lampholder combined with a headscarf, but this time the  headscarf was made of fire-proof material.
