The Casa Fullà (1970) was one of the first projects by the PER studio. In the project statement, Lluís Clotet and Oscar Tusquets expressed their intention for the architecture to “encourage a libertarian type of social relationship.” This idea translated into blending different housing typologies with generous common spaces designed to foster interaction among neighbors. The building did not turn its residents into libertarians, but it did attract rather unconventional inhabitants, and those simplex, duplex, and triplex apartments became one of the hubs of Barcelona’s counterculture.

This publication brings together graphic and textual material from the period: from the architects’ delicate drawings to a poem by Joan Brossa and a photo essay by Oriol Maspons. It also includes panels designed by Xavier Sust —like a postmodern Aby Warburg— to explain the work of Clotet and Tusquets, as well as a panegyric written by Anna Mª Moix under the pseudonym of the vampire “Count of Puigvalls,” implicitly inviting other outsiders —zombies, werewolves, and other long-haired beings— to inhabit this castle in Barcelona’s Guinardó district.

Lluís Clotet and Oscar Tusquets recount their story together, recalling —in a style reminiscent of Georges Perec— how their careers began. Ramon Faura, architect and musician, who once tried (unsuccessfully) to fit a piano into the Fullà, relates the project to the emergence of the computational world. Josep Mª Rovira, professor at the ETSAB and long-time resident of apartment 5C, explains the architectural culture of the period and the gestation of the building, while Ana Briongos, writer, traveler, and daughter of the constructor, recounts life inside these homes. Completing the narrative is a photo essay by José Hevia, showcasing the interiors of these exceptional apartments for the first time.
