La Sonrisa Vertical was a collection of erotic literature published by Tusquets Editores between 1977 and 2014. Conceived by Luis García Berlanga and Beatriz de Moura in 1970, it had to wait seven years to be launched due to censorship, only appearing after Franco’s death. The collection became a cultural landmark in Spain’s Transition, as eroticism emerged from censorship. Its first editions were characterized by a sober design: mauve covers, cursive typography, and an iconic logo. Over time, illustrations were added, but the visual identity remained recognizable. The collection revived banned or marginalized classics —Sade, Bataille, Sacher-Masoch, Pierre Louÿs— and gave space to contemporary Spanish-speaking authors. In 1979, the La Sonrisa Vertical Prize, chaired by Berlanga, was established to encourage erotic narrative in Spanish. Although the award was discontinued in 2004, the collection continued until 2014, with over one hundred titles published.
