Twenty years ago, we designed the Banco Catalano, which became a classic design of its time and, at the same time, one of the most copied projects in the Spanish market. If we proposed a new solution, it was not so much to distinguish ourselves from the many low-quality imitations, but rather to address the shortcomings we had identified over so many years of experience. The main change was replacing the expanded metal mesh with a perforated sheet. This meant losing some transparency and using more material, but the seat had a less aggressive texture and became much more resistant to corrosion and vandalism (the true Achilles' heel of the Catalano). Starting from this material change, the structure was slightly modified, the module length adjusted, and the seat panel was separated from the backrest. By also adding armrests, we achieved a design that was well received by certain public installations, such as the stations of the Ferrocarrils de Catalunya.
